Another subsequent pregnancy before six months had a significantly increased risk of pre-term birth, small babies, birth defects and even early neonatal death. This study was based on 440,838 births so it has statistic weight in what it says. It makes these pregnancies high risk.

The theories as to why this is include the nutritional drain of the first pregnancy not being fully replaced prior to getting pregnant again. Also, the same hormonal imbalances that may cause postpartum depression may have some effect on another pregnancy if it is too soon.
